(Spoilers ahead) The movie picks up six months after the series ended and the guys are no longer together and over the course of the movie they use flashbacks to learn what happened, but it would seem that the guys haven't spoken to each other for a few months, following a painful break up. After some difficult conversations they do find their way back to each other at the end of the movie. Both were well worth watching, but I actually think the movie was a bit better myself. There is a scene in the movie where the younger guy breaks down and it is a very powerfully acted scene. The movie and the series both have the same Hello, Stranger name, but the series comes first and leads directly into the movie.
