Overview

Joseph, a young Breton fisherman, sees Rita for the first time since their summer fling. Rita is working on a theatrical adaptation of the passionate letters of Abelard and Heloise, a legendary medieval couple. Attracted to Rita, yet terrified of his impotence, Joseph gradually slips into the shadow of Abelard, the castrated 12th-century monk.
